Jennifer Huget wrote a comprehensive guide to cruise line offerings for youngsters in the Washington Post.

Casual "value" cruise lines like Disney and Carnival are the best bets for families. Carnival's new Club O2 for teens 15 to 17 sounds promising for parents of this tough age group. It's an almost-adult lineup of programs and hang-outs. Luxury lines, like Crystal or Cunard, are less accommodating to kids. Their target market is couples, not families.

Techorati Tag: family cruises

Cruise to Bermuda in October

Bermuda is a top summertime cruise destination for a sophisticated island getaway. Yet in October, when the island's visitors begin to thin out, Bermuda is still a fine vacation spot. Great festivals keep things lively, and the weather is comfortable for shorts and bathing suits. And you can still take advantage of end-of-the-season cruise deals.

There are two major festivals in Bermuda in October — the Bermuda Music Festival and the Bermuda Culinary Arts Festival. The Bermuda Music Festival begins Oct. 5 and features three days of performances at the Royal Naval Dockyard. Starting October 21, the Culinary Arts Festival brings some of North America's top chefs to the island for 4 days of food and wine tastings, seminars and cooking competitions.

Celebrity offers affordable seven-night cruises to Bermuda in October. It makes the short crossing from Norfolk, Virginia to Bermuda 4 times in June of 2005. You have your choice of 6-, 7-, or 8-night itineraries. Starting at $900.

The Celebrity Horizon has 677 staterooms ; 533 have an ocean view. 20 suites. The Ocean View Staterooms have 24-hour room service, 100-percent cotton towels and 172 square feet of tasteful space. The Horizon entered service in 1990 and was refurbished in 1998.

The ship makes port in both Hamilton and St George's. Hamilton is the capital and commercial, entertainment and shopping center of Bermuda. The city's focal point is Front St, a harbourfront road lined with turn-of-the-century Victorian buildings in bright pastel lemon, lime, apricot and sky blue. Many buildings have overhanging verandahs, where you can linger over lunch and watch the boats ferry across the harbour. Attractions include the Bermuda Cathedral, the Historical Society Museum and the Bermuda National Gallery. Fort Hamilton offers a bird's-eye view of Hamilton Harbour. It's one of a series of fortifications erected in the mid-19th century during a period of rising tensions between Britain and the USA.

Quaint St. George's will sweep you back through 400 years of history. Come and listen to the original masonry buildings and narrow streets tell their stories of English expansion in the 17th and 18th centuries. The United Nations named the Historic Town of St. George and Related Fortifications a World Heritage Site.

Baltimore to Bermuda cruise season opens

The first cruise from Baltimore this season left the port on May 13th. There's nothing quite like approaching (or departing from) the Big Apple by sea, it's one of the most spectacular cruising experiences in the world.

A pair of ships will sail from New York to Bermuda on weeklong itineraries all summer: the Norwegian Crown and the Seven Seas Navigator.

Last spring, New Jersey staked its own slice of the cruise market. On the site of a former US Navy base on the west side of the Upper Bay of New York Harbor, the renovated facilities were transformed into the Cape Liberty cruise port. Currently, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises use the port. Though the setting is not quite as scenic as Manhattan's Westside piers -- a web of gantry cranes from the busy ports of Newark and Elizabeth frame views of Manhattan's skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Verrazano-Narrows and the Bayonne Bridges -- the location is convenient from New Jersey's main travel arteries. Cape Liberty is just a 15-minute drive from Newark International Airport and equally as close to the NJ Turnpike, Route 78 and I-95. Celebrity has positioned the Zenith at Cape Liberty all summer to do 7-night Bermuda cruises.

Learn more about New York and New Jersey cruises from Frommers.

Cruise from Philadelphia to Bermuda

With more cruise lines cruising from ports outside of Florida, an increasing number of passengers are starting their voyages out of the former Navy yard in Philadelphia.

More than 92,000 travelers -- a 50-percent increase over last year -- are expected to board ships at the Cruise Terminal at Pier 1 this year, beginning with a Norwegian Crown ship on a seven-day trip to Bermuda. Regis and Kelly have commandeered the whole ship, giving away free cruises to 1,000 contest winners and fans. The cruise will travel north from New York to Boston, then head south for stops in Philadelphia, Norfolk and Miami.

Pride of America is the first new U.S. flagged cruise ship in a half a century and is the biggest passenger ship ever built for the U.S. registry. "And if the cruise industry grows at even half its 20-year historic average, it is easy to envision a scenario similar to that of the mid '80s to early '90s, when demand far exceeded supply and those who didn't book a year in advance didn't go.''
Lessons: Plan ahead, be flexible about your choice of ship and think seriously about off-peak sailing dates.

Crown Princess to cruise to Bermuda

The newest Princess Cruises ship, Crown Princess, will make Bermuda a port of call in 2006.
The ship will stay in Dockyard for just one day – arriving in the morning and leaving that same evening. This year, CLIA member lines will offer Bermuda sailings from six convenient East Coast cities aboard eight cruise ships, each of which boasts its own decidedly distinct ambiance and amenities. In short, there’s something for everyone: families, singles, newlyweds and seniors. There’s a reason why 40 percent of travelers return to Bermuda again and again. First, there’s the lure of the island’s sugary pink sand beaches set against turquoises seas. Pastel houses are appointed with vibrant bougainvillea hibiscus and oleander. And although Bermuda provides travelers with all 21st century amenities, it has not lost touch with its Colonial past. Horse-drawn carriages still meander down Hamilton’s Front Street, and proper British afternoon tea is still a time-honored tradition. Last but not least, the island boast more golf courses per square mile than any other destination on the planet.

This veritable paradise is in easy reach. Cruise ships depart from ports up and down the U.S. Eastern seaboard, including Baltimore, Boston, Cape Liberty (Bayonne, NJ), New York, Norfolk (VA) and Philadelphia. “Last year’s Bermuda cruises by CLIA-member lines were a resounding success, and all indications point to a stellar 2005,” said Terry L. Dale, CLIA’s president and chief executive officer. CLIA is composed of 19 member cruise lines representing 95 percent of the cruise capacity marketed in North America and 16,500 travel agencies. To ensure space on these highly popular sailings – and to obtain the very best values – Dale advises travelers to consult a travel agent and book as early as possible. “The buzz words for booking 2005 cruises are ‘book early.’ Member lines report that bookings are coming in at an extremely healthy clip.” Following is a list of vessels bound for Bermuda in 2005:

CELEBRITY CRUISES
Horizon and Zenith will operate on Bermuda itineraries roundtrip from Cape Liberty, Norfolk, and Philadelphia. Horizon will sail on seven-night itineraries roundtrip from Norfolk and from Philadelphia. Zenith, meanwhile, will sail on seven-night itineraries roundtrip from Cape Liberty. Celebrity Cruises features cuisine prepared under the guidance of award-winning Master Chef Michel Roux.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE
Norwegian Cruise Line will position two ships in Bermuda this season. Norwegian Crown will operate on a series of six- and seven-day itineraries roundtrip from New York to Bermuda as well as a roster of six-day roundtrip cruises from Philadelphia. Norwegian Majesty will sail on seven-day itineraries roundtrip from Boston to Bermuda.

RADISSON SEVEN SEAS CRUISES
Luxury cruise operator Radisson Seven Seas will offer 13 cruises to Bermuda from May through early September aboard the 490-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Navigator. Customizing the shipboard experience for family groups, the Club Mariner children’s program will be available from June through August for kids six to 11 and 12 to 17.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL
Grandeur of the Seas will sail roundtrip from Baltimore on alternate Sundays. Jewel of the Seas will operate on 10-night itineraries roundtrip from Boston to the Caribbean with an overnight at Bermuda’s King’s Wharf. Voyager of the Seas, meanwhile, will sail on five-night voyages roundtrip from Cape Liberty departing on alternate Sundays.

Cruises from Philadelphia

Beginning next month more cruise passengers than ever are expected to depart from Philadelphia. This all-suite ultra-luxury cruise ship sails to Bermuda in May, June and August of 2005.

Highlights of the Seven Seas Navigator experience include: spacious suite accommodations (301 square ft. to 1,173 square ft.); luxurious in-suite amenities; impeccable service throughout; a generous space-per-guest ratio (67.3 ft. of public space per guest); varied dining possibilities (including an Italian alternative dining option and complimentary wine at dinner); an upscale Carita Spa (formerly Judith Jackson Sea Spa); and ten Internet-ready computers.

The Navigator experience is very personal for most passengers, with a majority of the staff (at every level) quickly learning your name and preferences.
